BUDDHA TRINITY CARVED ON A ROCK in Seosan - National Treasure No.48

The ma-ae samjonbul or Buddha Trinity carved on a rock which have the popularly known "faint smile of Paekche," shows all aspects of the Buddhist images of the Paekche period.(17 B.C.-A.D.660). Looking at the thick lips, merciful eyes and faint smile, we do not get an austere and solemn feeling. Nor do we feel authority or sternness. On the contrary, their expressions are simple, affectionate and at the same time, very much alive. It illustrates the typically benign smile of the Paekche people of 1,000 years ago.
