This stupa was built to honor Priest Muhak-taesa who was born during the closing years of the Koryo Kingdom (918-1392) and was trusted mentor of King Taejo (r.1392-98), the founding monarch of the Chosun Kingdom (1392-1910). It is typical of octagonal stupa and the sculpturing is superb. Now only stone plints remain of the temple, but in its time Hoeamsa was patronized by the royal Yi family. Stupa to Buddhist priest Chigong-hwasang and Naong-hwasang, a stone lantern supported by twin lions, and a monument to High priest Son-gak-wangsa are also located in the area. |
