Du Fu, whose courtesy name was Zimei, was born in Gongxian County, Henan Province in 712 A.D. and died in 770 A.D. Honoured as a "Holy poet" and one of the famous chines poets, Du Fu left behind himself more than 1,400 poems. In the late winter of 759 A.D., for taking refuge from the then An-Shi revolt against the Tang dynasty, Du Fu came to Chengdu and built here on the bank of Flower-Bathing Brook a straw-thatched house to which he referred in his poem as "a residence to the west of wanli Bridge and a hamlet to the north of Baihuatan", the Chengdu Thatched Cottage. He lived here intermittently for about 4 years and composed more than 240 poems. |
